How do you copy scenes from a DVD to your hard drive as AVI or Mpeg? - pinnacle tv center for win 7

I hold the copyright on some DVDs and you want to edit them in scenes together a demo for me with Pinnacle or Windows Movie Maker. I do not know how the scenes to convert DVD and AVI or MPEG format, so I have a new PC with Windows Media Center, and I think I have a TV card or some kind of WIN. Any help would be very grateful.
